NEUROSIS: Classic Sovereign EP To See Official Neurot Recordings Reissue Including Previously Unreleased Bonus Track

For the last 26 years, NEUROSIS have tapped into the elusive wellspring where resonance and dissonance collude, circling emotional poles where nothing is withheld, where the psyche screams for answers to Earth’s ancient mysteries

Following the recent reissues of some of NEUROSIS‘ most seminal groundbreaking earlier albums — Souls At Zero and Enemy Of The Sun — Neurot Recordings are now prepared to unveil the details on the next installment of this reissue series, with a new pressing of the band’s infamous Sovereign EP. Originally unveiled in 2000, the Sovereign EP was the first NEUROSIS release issued through the band’s own then newly-founded Neurot Recordings, with the vinyl pressing handled by Hydra Head. In chronological terms, Sovereign served as a millennial segue between two of the band’s two revered full-lengths of that era; 1999’s Times Of Grace and 2001’s A Sun That Never Sets

The EP, though shorter than a NEUROSIS full-length opus, is a psychotropic experience of the highest order. And to top that off, this Neurot Recordings CD reissue also includes a previously unreleased fifth track, with the inescapably feedback-tormented hymn “Misgiven” closing out the reissue, added as a special bonus to this repressing of the recordings. The reissue comes bound in an O-Card/jewel case setup like the other recent NEUROSIS reissues, with artwork completely redesigned and updated by Aaron Turner.

Neurosis would like to thank everyone who made our European tour last month such a success. It was amazing to play in so many places in such a short period of time. It is hard for us to take the time away from our jobs and families, and travel so far to make music, so it means a lot to us that so many of you also traveled long distances for the concerts. We also know that times are hard everywhere financially and we are grateful that you choose to spend your hard earned money supporting independent music. We all know that it is music that often gets us through hard times and saves us again and again. Special thanks to Ansgar for booking great shows. And of course much gratitude to our crew, Tony, Domenic, Damon, Dave, and Marek for your hard work and dedication. Thank you also to our drivers Rene’ and Michael for getting us to the shows safely and on time.

Portland in a couple weeks, then we are going to only be focusing on finishing the sounds for the next album.

To conclude the yearlong celebrations of 10 Years of ATP, it was recently announced that GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR will be the curators of our Weekend 1 Nightmare Before Christmas festival.

NEUROSIS is honored to be performing at the Nightmare Before Christmas festival. The weekend will run from the 3rd-5th December at Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead featuring around 40 bands picked by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who will also perform.

Neurosis and Roadburn are very pleased to report that Amen Ra, Nadja, Eugene S Robinson & Zeni Geva have been confirmed as the last 4 bands for the inaugural European version of Neurosis' acclaimed Beyond The Pale festival, set to be held at Roadburn 2009 on Saturday, April 25, the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.

Scott Kelly comments: "Beyond The Pale is our mosaic. To us art is not supposed to be safe and prepackaged for easy consumption. If it does what it's intended to do then you won't know what hit you and you'll wake up the next morning with the taste of blood in your mouth and an old spirit will lead you to your next destination. Amen Ra is a band that shows you what dedication and heart will bring you if you have good friends. They are putting out multitudes of music, writing, art and inspiration. Their progression is moving at a pace that has distanced from others who only pretend to understand what it takes to do this. I fully expect their performance at Beyond The Pale to be in another dimension and we are honored to have them bring it us. There is a price to paid for this sonic gift and Amen Ra have demonstrated time and time again that they are willing to pay with blood."

"Slow, heavy, epic, downtuned, fuzz guitar drone with melodic hooks swirling around in a hazy cloud of sonic bliss. Nadja creates musical movements made for those specific moments when life needs an epic glacial soundtrack," says Steve Von Till. "Canada's duo Nadja is prolific to say the least. One look at their expansive discography is dizzying for any artist who has been around for over a decade, but Nadja have only been around since 2003. Nadja is of the few bands playing Beyond the Pale that I have never seen live, I cannot wait to witness this music loud as hell emanating out of a huge sound system."

"Eugene S. Robinson is an enigmatic warrior poet who will teach you in harshest of terms what you can never understand. There are no barriers to what this performance may bring... all things are possible when Eugene is in the room. He is a writer and performer of the highest order. In support of his first novel "FIGHT: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Ass-kicking But Where Afraid You'd Get Your Ass-kicked For Asking" Eugene will share his lifelong relationship to violence, be it physical or psychic, and bring it front and center to the 013. We have known as friends, worked with, and been fans of Eugenes' unique art and vision for well over 20 years and have witnessed countless performances of Eugenes' band Oxbow as well as many spoken word engagements and there is only one thing that I can say for sure... You will never forget this performance, and you damn well may wish that you could. Having Eugene be a part of Beyond The Pale is the single defining moment of what we want this day to be. We are now officially at the threshold, there is no turning back, let it be as it will be" -- Scott Kelly.

"For Neurosis, what is music but a survival mechanism, and a war for the soul? Zeni Geva embody this spirit. Our first show with Zeni Geva in 1991 at the Kennel Club in San Francisco was a truly transformative experience. That night we got to witness not only the amazing dirty psych rock of Houston's Pain Teens, but we were floored by the crushing combative power of Zeni Geva from Japan. Their music was totally unique. It was oppressive in its repetitive nature, with the aggressive aesthetic of the noise movement, and still reminded me occasionally of more psych or progressive influences. They carried themselves like warrior monks on stage doing battle for the sake of the sound. Over the last 18 years, I have witnessed their evolution from their first primitive battle cries to further pushing the limits of independent heavy music.Their albums "Desire for Agony", "Freedom Bondage", and "10,000 Light Years" (which we had the good fortune to release on Neurot Recordings) are among my favorite albums. Our concerts with Zeni Geva have always been some of our most memorable. I look forward to greeting my friends from Zeni Geva again in Holland and I know that I am not alone in anticipating that seeing them play live will once again be a near religious experience" -- Steve Von Till
